PARIS — A fire at a Cottage Street home is under investigation, but Paris Fire Chief Brad Frost said the suspected cause is smoking in bed.
Frost said he expects a report from the state Fire Marshal’s Office in about a week.
The house at 179 Cottage St. belongs to Dale Brackett, he said. Brackett’s girlfriend and daughter weren’t home when the fire started.
Brackett wasn’t hurt at the scene, Frost said, but he had a heart valve replaced recently and lost his heart medication in the fire, and was hospitalized later Wednesday.
The fire was reported at about 11 p.m. Tuesday. By the time firefighters arrived, flames were already billowing out of the windows, the chief said.
The house, which is insured, was severely damaged on two sides. Frost said he’s not sure whether it can be repaired.
Norway, Oxford and Poland firefighters also responded to the fire.
