RUMFORD — Ruth M. Karpen, 85, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Sunday, April 17, at her residence with family members by her side.

Ruth was born in Rumford on May 10, 1925, the daughter of Cecil and Christie Stevens Mahoney, and graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford. She married Anthony Karpen Jr. on April 2, 1946, and was married for 59 years until the time of his death in 2005. She was a member of the Rumford United Methodist Church.

Ruth had several hobbies including knitting, crocheting, reading, crosswords and playing cards with her sisters and friends. She was a regular attendee at Beano for many years and looked forward to that time each week. She enjoyed traveling with her husband in the earlier years and going out for a Sunday drive and dinner. Ruth looked forward to spending time with her family during the visits throughout each year.

Survivors include daughters, Brenda Franklin and husband, Michael, of Hopewell, Va., and Carla Karpen, of Atoka, Tenn.; sisters, Beverly Jasud and husband, Donald, of Mexico and Evelyn Gaul, of Rumford; grandchildren, Heidi Patterson and husband, Brian, of Chesterfield, Va., and Craig Radcliff and Julie of Hopewell, Va.; great-grandchildren, Sydney, Matthew, and Alivia Patterson and Bryce Radcliff.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents; husband Anthony; a sister, Dorothy Dorr; and brothers, Cecil and Thomas Mahoney.

The family is appreciative to those that provided assistance to Ruth during the later years. A special thanks to Janice, Jean, Kim, Fran, Cheryl, Donna, Wendy, Robert, Androscoggin Home Health Care and the Hospice caregivers.
