Shirley Jones spends Sunday morning getting his vegetable seedlings ready to plant at his home in Buckfield. Jones, 79, orders his seeds at the beginning of the year and starts planting indoors next to his wood stove as early as March. Broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts are already in the ground, as well as a pumpkin named Buttons. “It’s kind of fun, and it takes a lot of work, but once you’re retired, you don’t worry about that,” Jones said. Jones and his wife Mary have gardens on both sides of North Hill Road. “I keep him on that side of the road,” laughed Mary, who likes to have her flower gardens closer to the house.
