DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to the request in the June 11 letter from Brenda Pierce, I remember Barkerville School very well. I also remember Bob Albert (we called him “Bobby”). I went to this school from the first to fifth grade. It was a two-room school. Grades one and two were in one room, and third, fourth and fifth were in the other room. It was situated just about where the new restaurant is across from Marden’s.

Next door was a Sawyers ice cream stand, where my sister worked for awhile. There was a small house across the street. Sawyers grain mill was where Subway is now.

I also remember Nadeau’s barber shop on the corner of King Avenue and Main Street. Mr. Nadeau used to come in and stoke the fire in the old pot-bellied stove located in the room where grades three through five were in the wintertime.

Also, Stetson’s store, which was at the corner of Switzerland Avenue and Main Street, is a home today. There was also Vermette’s store right next to where the tattoo parlor is today, and the owners lived upstairs.

My first-grade teacher was Miss Kenney, and my second-grade teacher was Miss Kennedy. For grades three, four and five, I had Miss Curran. Miss Howard taught grades one and two at that time.

Some other classmates I remember were Marlene Sedgely, Fern Masse, Roger Moreau, Bucky Lemay, Mary Lou Gurney, Teresa and John Reed, to name a few.

One year we hung a May basket on our teacher so that she would have to catch us as we scattered all over the neighborhood. I don’t remember how that turned out!

Hope this answers some questions. If anyone has more to share, it would be fun to hear from them. Thanks for renewing my memories. — Beverly (Turner) Giguere, begiguere@gmail.com

DEAR SUN SPOTS: There was someone looking for a rocking beach chair in Sun Spots on June 15, I would call it a rocking lawn chair; we have friends who have them. They are very comfortable. I want to get a couple of them myself.

If you go to www.campingworld.com and in the search box that asks you what item you’re looking for enter rocking chair, you will see several. The one I’ve seen lists for $36.66. — RVers from Minot via email
