AUGUSTA — Maine’s two U.S. senators say they want to have a closer look at President Barack Obama’s plan to pull home 33,000 troops from Afghanistan by next summer.
Sen. Olympia Snowe, a senior member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, says she’ll evaluate every aspect of the administration’s plan. The Republican says the decisions will have significant, long-term consequences for our soldiers and their families, and it’s vital to get this right.
Fellow Republican Sen. Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, says she welcomes the president’s decision to begin drawing down the number of troops in Afghanistan, but she continues to have questions about the overall U.S. mission there.
Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree says a complete end to US involvement Afghanistan needs to come quickly.
