SUMNER — Selectman Glen Hinckley, one of three selectmen, sent in his letter of resignation Wednesday night effective immediately, citing the stress of the job as selectman.

Because there is not enough time to for a new selectmen to be elected in a special election before the town’s August 8 town meeting, Hinckley’s replacement could be made at the town meeting, according to Town Clerk Susan Runes.

Runes said if a person wanted to run for selectmen, they could stand up at the annual town meeting and declare themselves a candidate. If no one comes forward, then it would have to go through the process of a candidate taking out  nomination papers and the town would call a special town meeting to elect another selectmen

In addition to the resignation of Hinckley another selectman,  Mark Silber spoke passionately to the crowd at the town office Wednesday.

Silber said that he has been unable to sleep or eat because of what is happening to his town and the personal attacks he’s endured as a town official.

“I have worked for this town for many years as a selectman,” Silber said, “and I have never been anything but honest. I have never lied, though I have been accused of lying. I’ve alway donated to the town.”

“Before she died, my wife and I donated the gardens at the town office and we started the scholarship fund among other things,” he said.”To think that I would do anything to jeopardize this town is unthinkable. I am just sick thinking about what has happened to this town. I’ve seen the town divided. I cannot sleep because of the fracturing of people I’ve always known. This has become too emotional. I am very disturbed.”

“I have been accused of accepting money, of being in cohorts with wind power contractors and I won’t be a part of any wind hearings or committees anymore,” he said.

In replying to email messages, Silber said that he had checked with the Maine Municipal Association and the selectmen were ex-0fficio on committees.

Jeff Pfeifer said Silber should get that in writing to see if this was legal.

“This wind issue is very divisive and people are letting their passions get in the way,” Bob Runes.
