LEWISTON — Irene brought more wind than rain to the Twin Cities Sunday, knocking down tree and power lines across both Lewiston and Auburn.

The work kept emergency and public works crews busy late Sunday and early Monday morning.

“We’d go to one street, remove tree branches or put up a barricade and move on,” said Lewiston Police Sgt. Joseph Bradeen. “We’d go back later on and take the barricade down.”

As of 6 a.m., three streets in Lewiston remained closed — Pinewoods, Deer and Ferry roads.

“Most of the problems are limited to the outskirts,” Bradeen said.

A number of Auburn roads remained closed because of tree limbs Monday morning. They are:

• North Auburn Road.

• Winter Street.

• Stevens Mill Road at Howe Street.

• Towle Avenue.

Riverside Drive was down to one lane near Bell Farms due to downed tree limbs.

Electricity was out to many parts of Lewiston-Auburn overnight, with Central Maine Power reporting outages to 182,000 around the state.

The company had scheduled an 8 a.m. conference call among their managers and is expected to release a statement and updated power outage report after that meeting.
