LIVERMORE FALLS — A fire that started in the basement of a house on Green Street on Friday afternoon was intentionally set, state fire investigator Edward Hastings IV said Tuesday.

“The primary suspect is undergoing medical treatment,” Hastings, an investigator for the Maine Office of the State Fire Marshal, said. He plans to file his report with the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s Office, which will review the case and determine if any charges will be filed, he said.

Local police, firefighters and a state fire investigator deemed the fire “suspicious” Friday.

Firefighters were initially called to a report of smoke at about 4:30 p.m. in the residential area off Main Street, near Rite Aid.

When police and firefighters arrived, they realized it was a structure fire and firefighters from several towns responded. Police informed firefighters that an occupant of the house was outside the building.

The fire was put out quickly, Livermore Falls firefighter James Butler Jr. previously said, and there was minimal damage.

The property is owned by Susan Gardner and Tom Gosselin of Livermore Falls, Hastings said.
