RUMFORD — The student council at Mountain Valley High School will sponsor a Red Cross blood drive from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, in the gym. Donors are urged to contact the student council or the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED CROSS to make an appointment.

According to the Red Cross flyer, “All presenting donors from Jan. 1 to 31 will receive a coupon for a free pound of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee.”

Student council member Cassie Dyke plans to give for the first time. “There’s always a shortage of blood and it’s important for people to have blood when they need it,” Dyke said. “A pint of blood can save three lives but even one life would be good for me!”

With a signed parental consent form, students as young as 16 years old may donate. Cody Smith, student council co-president, said, “Students can pick up a form in the office or from a student council member.”

Smith plans to donate for the fifth time on Jan. 17. He said, “I give because it’s for a good cause. The Red Cross stores blood for emergencies from natural disasters to a car accident. I feel fortunate that I can help.”

The student council usually sponsors two blood drives per year, one in the winter and one in May.
