SOUTH PARIS — Frances A. Jones Hammond passed away Jan. 20, at Market Square Health Care Center, where she had resided since April 2009.

She was born in Burnham on Sept. 14, 1909, the daughter of William and Rose Huston Jones. She came to South Paris around 1928 and worked for the family of Sheriff William Frothenham.

She married George Hammond on July 4, 1929. They shared 64 years together. George passed away in 1993, and Frances stayed in the home place, with the help of her family, until she was 99 years old.

She was a housekeeper at several homes on Paris Hill, but mostly was a stay-at-home mom. She loved to bake bread and make pies and doughnuts and gave most of the cooking away to family and friends. Her apple pie was the best you could eat.

She also liked her flower gardens and houseplants. She had a green thumb with plants. She and her husband visited many campgrounds over the years. They also liked to play bingo. She kept busy in her later years with her houseplants, embroidery work and sewing quilts, etc. She would give her handy work away at Christmas to family and friends. These special gifts are lasting memories to cherish.

She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Scribner and husband, Leslie, of South Paris and Marian Cummings and husband, Bernal, of West Paris; a son, Carl Sunwall and wife, Joan, of Tarrifville, Conn.; 16 grandchildren, Patricia Scribner of Farmington, Leslie Scribner and wife, Kathy, of Fayette, Bernard Scribner and Jacqui O’Brien of South Paris, Roger Scribner and wife, Rhonda, of Sumner, Don Scribner of Lewiston, Cindy Scribner, NP, and husband, Dr. Larry Hopperstead, of Lewiston, Carol Scribner Hall and husband, Neil, of Magalloway Plantation, Cathy Scribner of South Paris, Brian Scribner and wife, Sharon, of West Paris, Milan Cummings of York, Marilee Cummings and husband, Charlie, of California, Deanna Hammond Abbott and husband, Danny, of West Paris, Donna Hammond Kazregis and husband, Wally, of Peru, Carrie Hammond Adams and husband, Phillip, of West Paris, and Sandy Sunwall Phillips and husband, Steve, of Connecticut; 22 great-grandchildren, Sharon Phinney, Sheryl Scribner-Rocha, Jessica Cotton, Crystal Thomas, Justin Bonney, Ezekiel Hall, Elijah Hall, Shelby Scribner, Katy Emerson, Alyssa Emerson, Andrew Emerson, Jamie Ellen Cummings, Jeremy Cummings, Chelsea Cummings, Tristan Abbott, Dealan Abbott, Megan Kazregis, Brenton Adams, Soran Adams, Olivia Phillips and Julia Phillips; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
