‘Somali Experience’

POLAND — This month’s Check It Out! program, The Somali Experience in Maine – A Conversation, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the Community Room of the Ricker Memorial Library. Hibo Omer will be the guest speaker.

Omer is co-chairwoman of the New Mainers Community Collaborative and executive director of the New Mainers Public Health Initiative, a nonprofit organization working to educate and empower new Mainers to resolve health issues. She also works as a home visitor for Advocates for Children. Her experience and perspective is broadly based. Omer has a Bachelor of Arts degree in natural and applied science from USM, Lewiston/Auburn College.

Everyone is invited to this program. Coffee, tea and water will be provided. People may bring their brown bag lunches.

Forum on film

LEWISTON — Lea Girardin will talk on film in Maine at the Great Falls Forum at noon Thursday, Feb. 16, in the Lewiston Public Library’s Callahan Hall.

Girardin is one of the co-founders of both Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville and the Maine International Film Festival and she served as the director of the Maine Film Office from its inception in 1988 until 2010.

Girardin will provide a short history of filmmaking in Maine along with an overview of current activity in the state’s visual media industry. She will also be looking at the economic value of film and media production within the Maine economy and providing her thoughts on how we can further develop this sector.

The Great Falls Forum is a free, brown-bag lunch program and no registration is required. Feel free to order a gourmet sandwich or salad in advance from Guthries Cafe (376-3344) and have it delivered to the library. Coffee, tea and water will be available at the program.

ICD history

LEWISTON — “The History of ICDs and Electromagnetic Interference” will be the topic of a presentation set for the Thursday, Feb. 16, meeting of the Central and Western Maine ICD Support Group. Ellie Corey, a clinical consultant for Boston Scientific, will be the featured speaker.

The Central and Western Maine ICD Support Group is for individuals who have an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. Family members and other support persons are also welcomed to attend.

The meeting will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute first-floor conference room. The program is offered free of charge.

NEW GLOUCESTER — The next meeting of the New Gloucester Historical Society will be on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, 389 Intervale Road, Route 231. The meeting will be a business meeting for members only. There will be no program until the March 15 meeting.

Teen open mic

Lithuania teaching

AUBURN — Anyone curious about the Baltic nations that gained their independence from the Soviet Union only 20 years ago will want to attend the illustrated talk “Educational Adventures in Lithuania” from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at Auburn Public Library.

Last summer Annette Dorey traveled to Lithuania, one of the three Baltic nations. She was part of a small team of instructors from the U.S. who volunteered to go to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Dorey worked closely with dozens of English language teachers for a month of English immersion and teaching strategies.

Annette will share experiences from a unique summer abroad and the insight she gained about life under Soviet domination and the rich religious history of a proud nation.

Seniors lunch

LEWISTON — Lewiston Senior Citizens will serve a beef stew lunch with dessert and beverage at noon on Monday, March 5, for up to 65 members who have purchased tickets by Feb. 27. Chili, chocolate

LISBON — The 3rd annual Lisbon Chili, Chowder and Chocolate Challenge will take place Saturday, March 17, at Lisbon High School Cafeteria. Serving and voting will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Awards, 3:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per adult, $3 per child under 12, $20 maximum per family. All proceeds to benefit the Boosters Club.
