PeaceWorks program

BRUNSWICK — PeaceWorks will present Mexico’s Tarahumara, “Running Out of Time,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, in the Morrell Community Room, Curtis Library, 23 Pleasant St.

High on the plateaus and deep in the canyons of Mexico’s Sierra Madre Occidental live a group of indigenous people as unassimilated as any in the Americas. The Tarahumara or, more accurately, the Raramuri, renowned for their long-distance running ability, have survived for at least 2000 years, but their way of life is now threatened by illegal logging, narco-traffic and climate change.

Richard Hendrick began a project eight years ago when the most revered Owiruame or shaman, in the extremely remote community of Choreachi felt that he was ready to die and wanted to record his final words. Don Agustin Ramos was said to be more than 100 years old.

Richard videotaped him for several days along with the community’s traditional Semana Santa ceremonies. Last fall, he was finally able to present the tape to the community.
