PORTLAND — Jay Highway Department employees John Johnson and Todd Hiscock and Readfield Selectman John Perry were honored for their contributions to preserving local ecology with the 2012 eco-Excellence Award, given annually by municipally-owned ecomaine, a single-sort recycling and waste-to-energy operation.

Jay Town Manager Ruth Cushman nominated Johnson and Hiscock because, she said, they have gone above and beyond their responsibilities to make the town’s recent change to single-sort recycling a success. She credits their work with the smooth transition that was nearly effortless for Jay residents.

Cushman said, as a result of their efforts, “Last year we saw a decrease in the budget of 30 percent and we anticipate another reduction this year. They listened to the concerns of the public, the selectmen, their town manager and are good stewards of the environment. I am very proud of what they have done.”

Readfield resident John Perry was nominated by the Readfield-Wayne Solid Waste & Recycling Committee. While serving as a Readfield Select Board member Perry enrolled in the Maine Composting School and then led the effort to establish a composting program at the Readfield-Wayne Transfer Station.

He was nominated “for his vision and tireless commitment to composting.”

A luncheon was held at the ecomaine offices in Portland to honor all the winners on March 7. Chairman of the ecomaine Board Michael Bobinsky and Recycling Committee chairman Troy Moon presented each winner with a framed award and a fleece jacket made from recycled plastic.
