Nurses and Hospital Week

LEWISTON — From providing treatment and comfort to the sick, to welcoming new life into the world, hospitals are central to a healthy and optimistic community. That’s the message for the 2012 National Hospital Week, May 6-12: “Making Miracles Happen.”

This year, National Nurses Week coincides with Hospital Week, beginning on May 6, marked as RN Recognition Day, and ending on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession.

In keeping with its mission, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center is celebrating these occasions through service. Some of the nurses will spend the week at the St. Mary’s Food Pantry at the Nutrition Center on Bates Street. They’ve been collecting food and household items to replenish the pantry’s empty shelves. They will also prepare homemade laundry detergent to distribute to clients.

Back at the hospital, the nursing staff is selling 50/50 raffle tickets with proceeds benefiting the pantry. Other events such as an awards tea, guest speakers and a blessing will take place throughout the week.
