Meroby, Rumford pre-K

RUMFORD — Children who will be 4 years old on or before Oct. 15 and live in the Mountain Valley Region (Rumford, Mexico, Hanover, Roxbury, Bryon) are eligible for the pre-K program at Meroby Elementary and Rumford Elementary.

Applications are available at both schools. Only completed applications with a copy of the child’s original birth certificate (from the town where the child was born; the birth certificate from the hospital will not be accepted) will be accepted. Methodist public supper

RUMFORD — On Saturday, May 19, the Rumford United Methodist Church will serve a public supper at the chapel on Linnell Street. The meal will consist of casseroles, cole slaw, baked beans, hot dogs, rolls and pie plus hot and cold beverages. The cost will be $7 per person. There will be one serving at 5 and the doors will open at 4:30.

A cappella concert

AUGUSTA — Maine-ly Harmony Chorus and the Kennebec Valley YMCA Youth Chorus will present Spring Into A Cappella Sound at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at the Vile’s Arboretum, 153 Hospital St. This musical program of barbershop-style four-part harmony will delight young and old alike, as the women’s chorus performs old favorites and the students sing Disney theme songs.

RUMFORD — Stephens High Class of 1959 will meet at noon Wednesday, May 23, at the River Valley Grill for their monthly luncheon. For more information call Fern at 562-7143.

Ice cream fundraiser

RUMFORD — An ice cream social fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Praise Assembly of God Church, 89 Congress St. Cost is $3 for a hot fudge sundae, $2 for cones. Proceeds benefit Culture of Compassion event to be held in August.

Folk, country concert May 25

RUMFORD — A concert featuring folk and country music from the 1970s will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 25, at the Rumford Falls Auditorium in the municipal building. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Songs and music will be performed by Andy Arsenault, Andy St. Pierre and Evan Belanger.

Tickets for adults are $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Tickets for children under 12 are $5 in advance or $7 at the door. Advance tickets are available at Bartash Card and Gift.

The concert is hosted by the Rumford Performing Arts Committee. Proceeds benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Plant sale in Canton

CANTON — A plant sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27, at the Heritage Park, Route 108.

The sale is sponsored by the Canton Parks and Trails Committee.

Puzzle Mountain hike

NEWRY — Mahoosuc Land Trust will host a hike of Puzzle Mountain at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 26. The hike is of moderate difficulty, with some scrambling near the summit of the 6.5-mile round trip.

There is a shorter hike of 2.4 miles with excellent views of Grafton Notch from the rock ledges. Those looking for added difficulty may add to the 6.5-mile trip by hiking the Loopette trail around the summit of Puzzle, 1.5 miles.

Bring water, snacks, lunch for the five- to six-hour hike. Meet at the parking area 4.7 miles north on Route 26 from intersection with Route 2 in Newry, right hand side, across from Eddy Road.
