POLAND — Selectmen on Tuesday awarded the bid for the town’s summer road paving program to Pike Industries, the lowest of three bidders with a bid price of $244,716.

Roads scheduled to be paved, completely or in part, include Outlet, Schellinger, Saunders, Perkins and Lewiston Junction.

Selectmen also received four bids for work sealing cracks in a number of other town roads, with Pro-Seal the lowest bidder at $12,087.

Town meeting voters approved a total of $280,000 for the paving program, and selectmen agreed that they would make arrangements for the bid winners to perform additional work, at their unit price, using the $35,000 remaining in the paving budget.

Capt. Ray Lafrance of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department presented selectmen with the final copy of a contract for the sheriff’s office to provide police services to the town for the 2012-13 fiscal year beginning July 1. The contract carries a price tag of $187,469 — an amount that is about $15,000 lower than the current year’s contract.

Lafrance also introduced Timothy Gamache, recently named by county commissioners to serve as Poland’s deputy. Selectmen authorized Town Manager Rosemary Kulow to sign the contract.

Kulow reported that the Public Works crew has been unable to re-blaze the boundary between the town’s transfer station property and the new conservation easement property because the original blazing marks are no longer visible.

Selectmen agreed to contract with town forester Fred Huntress, who originally blazed the markings and has records of his work, to re-blaze the boundary at a cost of $50 per hour, not to exceed eight hours.
