AUGUSTA — The members of Maine-ly Harmony chorus sat on the edges of their seats April 28 in Montreal, awaiting the judges’ decision as to which choruses made the area competition cut and would be moving on to the international competition in Disney World next fall.

Not only did they qualify, but they were awarded the Rising Star Award for the largest increase in score from the previous competition. Director Kathy Greason of Hallowell and President Nancy Bosse of Chelsea accepted the award on stage to an abundance of cheers and tears.

The competition in Montreal was the climax of an exciting and eventful year for the local women’s a cappella chorus that meets at the Togus VA for its Wednesday evening rehearsals.

Following the 2011 area competition in New Hampshire, which also qualified them for the internationals last November in Hershey, Pa., the singers spent the year performing throughout the community: for the University of Maine Augusta College of Arts and Humanities, Thomas College, Respite Care, the Elks and Eastern Star, and for the residents of retirement and nursing homes and the veterans at Togus, as well as Goodwill Hinkley’s Festival of Trees and the Gardiner Christmas Tree Lighting, to name a few.

They performed at the State House as part of the Salute to Ronald Reagan and at the Togus VA’s 9/11 10th anniversary remembrance. They delivered Singing Valentines in February and Maine-ly Harmony even joined its sister choruses in New Hampshire for a flash mob performance at the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua.

A Maine-ly Harmony team worked with students at the Kennebec Valley YMCA last fall and again this spring, teaching them barbershop harmony. The students performed at the chorus’s show last October, held at Cony High School and also planned performances for KVYMCA’s annual meeting, for veterans and their own show.
