MEXICO — A local man was seriously injured Monday night when his bicycle hit the front bumper of a pickup truck, police said.
Mexico police Lt. Roy Hodsdon said the bicyclist, whose name was not immediately released, and another bicyclist were traveling west on the River Road around 7:30 p.m. when the first bicyclist veered into the travel lane, hitting the front bumper of a GMC pickup truck also traveling west. The driver’s name was not immediately released.
The bicyclist struck his head on the pavement. He was flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Hodsdon said eyewitnesses reported that the truck driver saw the bicyclist veer farther into the westbound lane and tried to avoid a collision.
The lieutenant said the bicycle may have malfunctioned, causing the crash.
The truck bumper sustained minimal damage, he said.
Responding to the scene were Mexico officer Dan Carrier and officers from Dixfield and Rumford police departments, and Med-Care Ambulance Service and the Mexico Fire Department.
