FARMINGTON — A Mt. Vernon man was arrested Tuesday on a charge of being a fugitive from justice related to not registering as a sex offender in Maricopa County in Arizona, Lt. Niles Yeaton of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department said.

Tobin A. Fournier, 33, turned himself in on an outstanding warrant out of Farmington District Court on charges of failure to appear on an operating under the influence charge and operating without a license. There was also warrant out for him from Lewiston District Court on an assault charge, Yeaton said.

Fournier’s name was run through the system and deputies discovered that Fournier also had a warrant out for him from Maricopa County in Arizona, which related to two counts of failing to register as a sex offender.

According to the Denver Post newspaper website, Fournier was charged with first-degree sexual assault in Clear Creek County, Colo., in 2000, but pleaded guilty to third-degree sexual assault and attempted sexual assault the following year when he began a four-year prison sentence.

The case was related to sex crimes involving two 15-year-old girls, according to the website of the West Valley View in Arizona. Fournier has been classified as Level III, or high-risk offender, according to the Arizona Department of Safety, the newspaper stated.

Fournier grew up in the Jay area.

Maricopa County police have contacted the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department to let them know that they will extradite Fournier back to Arizona, Yeaton said.

Fournier remained at the Franklin County Jail in Farmington Wednesday afternoon.
