Don Perkins, a self-described “barnologist” and resident of Sebago Lake, has written a book about his passion titled “The Barns of Maine: Our History, Our Stories.”

Perkins traveled statewide to survey the people, history and craft of Maine’s barns, compiling his findings on the printed page.

In “The Barns of Maine,” he examines the structures, origins and evolution of the state’s barns — from modest English to grand Victorian — underscoring the vital role they play in people’s lives.

A freelance writer since 2005, Perkins wrote a 20-week series on local barns in 2007-08 for a Gray-New Gloucester weekly publication. He also wrote a column on barns that appeared in the Advertiser Democrat in Norway for one-and-a-half years.

Perkins speaks at area historical societies and leads barn tours. He is a former carpenter and woodworker with a longtime interest in timberframing.

The 187-page paperback is available at area bookstores and online, and from the publisher at (866) 457-5971 or historypress.net.
