Scholarship applications

POLAND — Applications are now being accepted for the Bruce M. Whittier Memorial Scholarship. Two $1000 scholarships for further education will be awarded this year to graduating seniors from Poland Regional High School. Applicants may apply through their high school guidance department. Applications must be received no later than March 30.

Whittier, a leading citizen of Mechanic Falls and teacher at Poland Community School for many years, was killed in an accident in the fall of 1997 when he stopped to help a motorist in trouble.

La Leche League meeting Jan. 9

AUBURN — Expectant women and breastfeeding mothers are invited to a La Leche League meeting to be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 102 Bennett Ave. Babies are always welcome.

This month’s discussion will focus on “The Advantages of Breastfeeding For Mother and Baby.” Pregnancy is an ideal time to begin attending meetings, and mothers find continued attendance provides support throughout their breastfeeding experience. Healing Gifts kids’ workshop

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing is offering a free workshop for ages 3 and up who have a loved one with cancer. Healing Gifts will take place Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St.

Tookie Bright, Children’s Program coordinator, and Doreen Wilcox present a fun and creative workshop where kids will explore different ways to shower their sick loved one with gifts from the heart. Participants will share ideas, read a story and create bracelets, pins, and other easy crafts that help show how much they care.

Lisbon Rec bus tour deposits

LISBON — The Lisbon Recreation Department will host a trip to Toronto and Niagara Falls on June 9-15. The trip is open to people from any town.

Travelers will visit Casa Loma Castle and Niagara-On-The-Lake, as well as take a ride on the Maid of the Mist and much more. The price is $579 per person, double occupancy, and includes transportation, a 10 meal plan, lodging, tours and tips. A passport or passport card is required.

A $75 deposit holds a spot. Checks should be made payable to Diamond Tours, Inc. and sent to the Lisbon Recreation Department, 18 School St., Lisbon Falls ME 04252, by Feb. 11. Nurturing Families

LEWISTON — Advocates for Children is accepting registration for upcoming Nurturing Parenting Programs.

Nurturing Parenting Program for Parents of School Age Children is for parents and their children. It will take place Tuesdays from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Fairview Elementary School, Auburn. The cost is $50 per person or $75 per couple; children are free. The 15-week program begins Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Nurturing Fathers is for any man who is parenting children. It will be held Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the YMCA, Auburn. Fee is $40 per person. The 13-week program begins Jan. 17.

Sponsored by Advocates for Children, the Nurturing Parents programs help parents learn how to establish nurturing routines for meal times, bedtimes and chores; replace yelling with effective discipline techniques such as redirection, choices and consequences, family rules and praise; gain a sense of personal power and feel good about themselves and their parenting techniques; and have fun as a family. Children develop greater self-esteem, learn positive attitudes and respect for others’ feelings, and learn how to handle stress and anger in an appropriate manner.
