AUBURN — Roberta Beulah Broome, 77, died peacefully at Clover Health Care, Jan. 13. Her daughter, Denise (Gemme) Asselin of New Gloucester and son, Jean Gemme of Wales were at her side at the time of her death.

She was born July 22, 1935, to the late Raymond S. Roberts and Doris Hare Roberts.

Roberta completed the sixth-grade at Wales Elementary School. She didn’t continue with her education because of illness as a child. She worked at The Albany Felt, Paragon Glass and Raytheon as a young woman and then went on to work as a cutter in several different shoe shops.

Roberta married Jean Rene Gemme on Feb. 16, 1952. They had two children together. They were divorced in 1973. While working at Mount Washington Inn as a hostess, she met Roy F. Broome, the love of her life. They were married on Jan. 9, 1977 at South Lewiston Baptist Church.

They moved to Florida, where she worked as a caregiver to the elderly. It was in this field she found her passion. She loved helping others. She cooked meals for her neighbors, visited the sick, and transported the elderly to whereever they needed to go.

She also loved to crochet. Everyone she knew had an afghan that was made especially for them.

She retired in 1996 to care for her ailing husband. She cared for him until his death in1998. Roberta lived in Florida until 2009 when she moved to Clover Health Care in Auburn, to be closer to her children.

She is survived by a sister, Elaine Foss of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two brothers, Willis Roberts of Auburn and Larry Roberts of Litch?eld; her granddaughters, Cindy Asselin Grimmett of Waterboro, Shelley Asselin Grumann of Sanford, Andi Gemme Guimond of Monmouth; her precious little great-grandchildren, Alysson Grimmett, Nathaniel Grimmett, Joseph Guimond, Evelyn Guimond and Sophia Grumann; eight nieces; and one nephew.

She was predeceased by one niece. She loved her “little kids.”

A special thanks to Clover Health Care staff and Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for the excellent care given her.
