LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine has teamed up with Phoenix Karate Academy to offer a children’s karate program. The classes begin on March 2 and will take place every Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. until April 6.

The program  is geared toward kids ages 5 to 7. The class curriculum focuses on providing tools for the child to grow into a strong role model. Children are taught that karate starts and ends in self-defense and it should never be used to harm others. They are also taught the importance of leading by example, building their self-confidence and the self-confidence of others.

Phoenix Karate Academy are the Founders of Pinan-Do Karate which translates to “Peaceful Way.” They believe that karate should not be used as a way to cause harm to others but rather as a way to unlock one’s hidden strengths and weaknesses and use these lessons to discover individual purpose.

Cost of the six-week program is $90 for YWCA members, $100 for nonmembers. Space is limited. For more information, call the YWCA of Central Maine at 795-4050 or visit www.YWCAMaine.org.
