100 years ago, 1913
A few months ago, a young Polish girl came to Lewiston. Never before had she been in Maine, but she came to the Spindle City in search of work. She asked the first kindly looking person whom she met if he could direct her to the place where the Polish people lived. She could speak just enough English to make herself understood. By good fortune, she happened to ask someone who was willing to rightly direct her. It is for the purpose of helping these strangers who might be led astray or into danger that the Women’s Christian Association proposes to establish a travelers’ aid. The plan is to secure a depot matron to meet all incoming trains and to be there for the benefit of young girls or women,

50 years ago, 1963
A display of strength in the Nordic events helped Edward Little High School skiers overcome a three point deficit and led them to their first state interscholastic ski championship since 1959. The EL squad scored heavily in both the jumping and cross country at Pettengill Park in Auburn Saturday to pile up a title winning point total of 382.87, while runner-up Rumford took second with 378.04 points.

25 years ago, 1988
Skyrocketing development is pressuring Auburn city officials to increase services despite drops in revenue and an insufficient number of public employees, two department heads Wednesday told a committee reviewing the city’s management system. “The roads are deteriorating because of a lack of day to day maintenance. I think that’s pour biggest serious shortfall right now,” Department of Public Works Director Robert Belz said. Belz and Community Development Director Roland Miller told the committee that the city’s personnel and infrastructure may become swamped by the demands being placed on the system because of increased development.
