VFW 9150 meets Feb. 18

LEWISTON — The Longley-Dionne VFW Post 9150 will hold their monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at the Lewiston Armory on Central Avenue.

All officers and members are encouraged to attend.

First Auburn Seniors to meet

AUBURN — First Auburn Seniors will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Don Nason, president, will conduct the 11 a.m. meeting. There will be the crowning of the Valentine King and Queen. Ice cream sundaes will be served and bingo played following lunch.

Tickets will be available for the boiled dinner on March 20. The cost is $5.

Forty-two members attended the Feb. 6 meeting. Attendance winners were Rita Gagnon and Joyce Poole. Pot of Gold winners were Lucy Cowles, Phyllis Latlippe and Don Nason. Special drawings were won by Caroline Chapman, Lennie Godbout and Carmela Hewitt.

The membership welcomed new members Jan Biron, Sue Patneaude and Marilyn Dunn.

Eastern Star meeting Feb. 21

LISBON FALLS — Pioneer Chapter No. 11 Lisbon Falls, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Ancient York Masonic Hall, Route 196. Refreshments will be served after the meeting. All members of the order are invited to attend.

Cabin Fever Reliever set

AUBURN — Turner Street Community Church, 263 Turner St., will hold a Cabin Fever Reliever from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22. The snow date is Feb. 23.

Rick Hagerstrom, Christian illusionist and juggler, will perform. There will be food, fun and fellowship for the whole family. Admission is free; all are welcomed.

Parking is available in the lot at the corner of Whitney and Vernon streets.

Student work to air on Me-TV

NEW GLOUCESTER — WPXT-TV has announced that Green Screen Adventures is featuring the work submitted by Alison MacDonald from Gray-New Gloucester Middle School.

She wrote “The Penci,” which will be aired on Green Screen Adventures at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, on Me-TV. Me-TV can be seen on WPXT, Channel 51.2, and Time Warner Cable, Channel 87.

Green Screen Adventures, the nationally award-winning children’s television show, selects writing and illustrations by students and brings them to life using story theatre, game shows and puppetry.

Since its premiere in March 2007, works from more than 2,000 students have been featured. African American sci-fi writers

AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library will celebrate Black History Month with a free lecture on “The African American Contribution to Science Fiction Writing” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the library, 49 Spring St.

Professor Theri Pickens, assistant professor of English at Bates College, will explain black science fiction origins and influences which include folklore, fantasy and funk. Writers such as Samuel R. Delany, Nalo Hopkinson, Minister Faust, Nnedi Okorafor, N. K. Jemisin, Tananarive Due, Andrea Hairston and Nisi Shawl are among the writers who continue to work in black science fiction.

Octavia E. Butler was an extremely influential African-American science fiction author who died in 2006. W.E.B. Du Bois, mainly noted for other types of writing, also wrote science fiction stories.

Heartsaver CPR, AED course

AUBURN — The Corporate and Community Services Department at Central Maine Community College will offer the American Heart Association’s Heartsaver CPR and AED course from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 5. Deadline for registration is Feb. 25.

This course combines basic CPR skills training with instruction and practice in using an automated external defibrillation device. This course covers adult, child and infant CPR and AED with and without a mask. Participants must pass a skills test to qualify for a Heartsaver CPR AED course completion card.

This single-afternoon course is open to the public. The cost is $79 and includes materials.

NARFE meeting set for Feb. 26

LEWISTON — Lewiston Chapter 1804 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the Ramada Inn.

Lunch will be served at noon. Matthew Richard, funeral director of Fortin Funeral Home, will be the speaker.

Phlebotomy intro course

LEWISTON — The Corporate and Community Services Department at Central Maine Community College will offer Introduction to Phlebotomy from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday evenings from March 14 to May 2. The cost is $475 and includes materials and book. Registration deadline is March 6.

A combination of lecture, lab and hands-on practical experience, this course will allow students to develop the skills needed to work in an entry level position in medical facilities as a phlebotomist. Coursework includes selecting and preparing the skin puncture site, collecting specimens, adhering to the proper health and safety guidelines, patient/technician relationship and clerical duties associated with proper record keeping of laboratory tests.
