St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston would be able to start a child-care program for employees that would serve as a model for the state under a bill scheduled for public hearing at the State House. Debra Chaloux, benefits manager for the hospital, said the program would also be a model for hospitals seeking to attract and keep nurses during a shortage of health-care workers. The Lewiston YWCA would be responsible for running the child-care center, which would be placed in a dorm that will be vacated when the hospital’s nursing school closes in June.
