Lewiston firemen and civilians worked desperately early this afternoon to free a Lewiston man who was trapped under wet sand, clay and tar, as a result of a construction cave-in at the Malenfant Dairy on Lisbon Street. At press time, Marius Roy, about 30, was still partially buried. A fellow worker, Wilbur Caron of Prospect Street, was a witness to the near tragedy. Workers had removed more than one foot of earth from above his head and were working down his body to free him from the clammy earth. Caron said, “I could hear him screaming from down under the dirt. We were tossing some dirt into the truck and Roy started to climb out of the hole when the side collapsed on him.” Scores of passersby hindered work during the rescue and on repeated occasions had to be ordered back. The powerful aerial ladder on a Lewiston Fire Department truck was used as a crane to pull Roy from the trench. His injuries at the scene were unknown.
