100 years ago, 1913
No more wild shots will be made by Lewiston police officers. Murderers and robbers will take notice that the men with blue uniforms and brass buttons will soon be crack shots. Arrangements have been made for the members of the police force to go to the armory on Park Street at certain times and hold rifle practice. The officers of the local militia informed the committee on police that they would be glad to have the policemen use their range to increase the efficiency of the department. There is a gymnasium at the armory and it is expected that the patrolmen will before long be taking strenuous exercise on the horizontal bars and then will practice with heavy weights.

50 years ago, 1963
Ole Man Winter stepped out of bounds, dealing the Lewiston-Auburn area and the State of Maine a crippling winter-like blow that knocked down telephone and power lines, snapped trees and forced cancellation of hundreds of athletic contests throughout he state. Lewiston-Auburn, with 1.3 inches of precipitation in the form of rain, sleet, snow and hail, apparently escaped the brunt of the freak storm. Telephone and power lines in the Twin City area escaped with only minor damage, but outlying areas and surrounding towns were hit hard by the heavy, moisture-laden snow. Heavy snow estimated at up to eight inches fell in the Bridgton and Rangeley areas.

25 years ago, 1988
Auburn Planning Board members Tuesday gave quick approval to a proposed 72 apartments for senior citizens off Stetson Road. The congregate housing apartments are the second phase of a retirement community called Schooner Estates. An earlier phase included 27 studio apartments and 36 nursing beds. The apartment complex will allow elderly residents the opportunity to live independently, or rely on services provided by Schooner Estates.
