The Maine Department of Environmental Protection issued a warning Thursday that ground-level ozone concentrations are expected to reach unhealthy levels this weekend.

The DEP reports 0zone levels have been building in southern New England and Mid-Atlantic states the past few days and will move into the Gulf of Maine. Ozone levels are expected to reach unhealthy levels along the Maine coast.

On Friday, the highest levels of ozone are expected along the Midcoast and Downeast regions.

On Saturday the highest levels of ozone are likely for the southwest coast and Midcoast regions.

An approaching low pressure system is expected to wash away ozone Sunday.

DEP says high ozone levels can reduce lung function and irritate breathing in  children, adults who exert themselves, and individuals suffering from a respiratory disease such as asthma, bronchitis or COPD.
