Church to have new flag in ceremony

TURNER — A celebration of American freedom will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, June 30, at the North Turner Union Presbyterian Church.

An American flag that has flown at the church for more than 50 years will be officially retired and a new flag will be installed. A military color guard, featuring members of Post 111, American Legion, will perform the ceremony to honor and remove the old flag and officially install the new one. There will be special, patriotic music and a full gun salute.

“It’s the perfect time to celebrate our freedom and install the new flag as the July 4th holiday approaches,” said the Rev. Lissa Bradford, pastor of the church. “This community came together to mourn and pray for the tragedies in Newtown, Conn., and Boston, Mass. Now it’s time for us to gather, to celebrate and to honor the men and women who currently serve and who have served in all branches of the U.S. military. We hear about love and hope every week at our church, and we simply could not do that without our American freedom. We do not take it for granted,” Bradford said.

The new flag is one that was flown over the U.S.S. Constitution in Boston Harbor. The church is located at 58 Howes Corner Road, North Turner. The service is open to the public. A reception will follow.
