BURNHAM — Two people were seriously injured when their helicopter crashed in the woods Wednesday evening, according to police.
The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department received a call at 6:39 p.m. Wednesday of a Schweizer 300C helicopter that crashed in a heavily wooded area approximately a quarter-mile off Winnecook Road, Sgt. Dale Brown said in a release.
“During the flight, the pilot experienced technical problems and the helicopter went down as a result of that,” Brown said. “The female passenger made it out of the woods and to the road for help.”
The pilot, a 58-year-old male from Bowdoinham, and a 27-year-old female passenger from Unity College were searching for bear population in the area, he said.
“Each subject was transported to local hospital(s) with serious but what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries,” said Brown.
The Federal Aviation Administration was contacted and will investigate the crash.
Burnham and Clinton fire departments assisted at the scene as well as Unity Ambulance.
