AFB veterans to meet Aug. 8

AUBURN — The July get-together of the Southern Maine Squadron of the Sampson AFB Veterans Association at the Dolphin Marina in Harpswell was a great success with 34 in attendance.

The August get-together will be Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Village Inn, 166 High St., at noon.

This is an informal gathering for lunch, of veterans who survived basic training at Sampson AFB and their guests. Most of the veterans served during the Korean conflict.

Sampson was known as Sampson Naval training center from 1942-45, then Sampson Air Force Base between 1950-1956.

All veterans are welcome to join and relate stories.

Sing-along and ice cream social

LISBON — A sing-along and ice cream social will take place at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, at Lisbon Methodist Church, 14 School St.

Golden Age Club to meet Aug. 13

AUBURN — Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish – Golden Age Club’s next meeting is Tuesday, Aug. 13, at Sacred Heart Church.

American Legion meets Aug. 14

LEWISTON — American Legion Post 210 will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the Armory on Central Avenue. All interested parties and current members are welcome to join us the group prepares for the next year.

Breastfeeding support group

AUBURN — The La Leche League offers breastfeeding information and encouragement to pregnant women, new mothers and growing families. Services offered include monthly meetings and 24-hour telephone help.

All interested women are invited to attend the next meeting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at 102 Bennett Ave. This is a change from the usual Wednesday meeting date.

Babies are always welcome. Pregnancy is an ideal time to begin attending meetings in preparation for baby’s arrival and mothers find continued support throughout their breastfeeding experience.

All concerns about breastfeeding are welcome for discussion in addition to the scheduled topic, “Breastfeeding, the Mother-Baby Relationship and the Weaning Process.” The discussion will include nutrition for nursing mothers, introducing solids to baby and the weaning breastfed baby.

Lunches on the Lawn, bake sale

WINTHROP — Winthrop Congregational Church UCC will hold the 26th annual Bake Sale and Lunches on the Lawn on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Food sale starts at 9 a.m., luncheon at 11 a.m. featuring 100 percent lobster rolls, chicken salad rolls, pie and blueberry cake.

There will also be Rada cutlery, photos, cards and an art show.

The event will be inside if it rains.

All proceeds benefit missions of the church.

Course on child abuse response

AUBURN — In collaboration with Advocates for Children, Central Maine Community College will offer a “Responding to Child Abuse” course this fall. This 36-hour comprehensive course will be held on the CMCC campus Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The class will start Sept. 17 and end Dec. 10.

The cost is $250 and includes all materials. Upon successful completion of the course participants will receive 4.5 continuing education units.

This course will offer participants an opportunity to learn from a wide range of professionals (DHS, law enforcement, courts, medical community, foster care programs) on how they work to combat the cycle of abuse in Androscoggin County.
