WILTON — A reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, to welcome the return of Julieanne Reed’s exhibit of paintings to the Wilton Free Public Library. Light refreshments will be served.

Reed is an oil painter and acknowledged “color shaman” who lives in Mexico, Maine. She holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting from the Portland School of Art, now Maine College of Art or MECA. Although she began painting in oils and gouache, she now uses high-quality oil pastels.

“I paint from my dreams,” Reed said. “My paintings are often inspired by a line of poetry — Rumi, Rilke, Mary Oliver.” The canvasses are large, the colors are vibrant, and the themes are organic.

“I love color,” Reed said. “I can taste color.” She likes to layer colors to provide depth to her art. Animals peek coyly out of corners, emerge subtly from camouflaged background, or boldly take center stage. “There are meanings and messages assigned to animals in most cultures.”

The exhibit will feature all new paintings and, as last year, high-quality prints will be sold, with 30 percent of the proceeds going to benefit the library. Orders for prints will be taken any time throughout the exhibit, which will be displayed until the end of September.

The library is at 104 Main St. For more information, call 207-645-4831 or visit http://www.wilton-free.lib.me.us/.
