AUBURN — Bryan Peabody pleaded not guilty Friday to charges that he stabbed a man in a late-night dispute over a couch in July.

Peabody, 18, of 24 Cottage St., Lewiston, was arrested July 20 and charged with stabbing George H. Ross with a knife at an apartment on Main Street in Mechanic Falls.

The attack happened about 2 a.m. that day and police reported Ross suffered numerous knife wounds in his side, abdomen and head that did not appear to be life-threatening.

Peabody suffered bruises and cuts on his hand, according to Mechanic Falls police.

Peabody has been held at the Androscoggin County Jail on $15,000 cash bail since his arrest, and was indicted Wednesday by an Androscoggin County grand jury on felony charges of elevated aggravated assault and aggravated assault.

If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in jail and $25,000 in fines.

Lewiston attorney Jason Ranger has been court-appointed to represent Peabody.
