CAMPTON, N.H. — Employees of the U.S. Forest Service, White Mountain National Forest started returning to work last week following the President’s signature of a continuing resolution that funds the government and ends the shutdown. The Forest is immediately beginning its process of reopening recreational facilities and reinstating timber and stewardship contracts that had been suspended during the shutdown.

Amenities at Recreation Day Use sites are now open. This includes toilets and garbage services. While many of the campgrounds on the White Mountain National Forest have arrived at the end of their operational season, some campgrounds, run by concessionaire, remain open. According to ProSports’ website, icampnh.com, Hancock, Blackberry, Tripoli, Osceola and Barnes Field campgrounds are open.

“Employees are excited and grateful to be back at work,” said Tom Wagner, forest supervisor. “They have been out on the ground opening sites, cleaning facilities and picking up a lot of garbage. They have also been contacting our partners, volunteers and contractors – getting everybody back to work as quickly as possible.”

Visitors are reminded to pay attention to the weather and shorter days. Fall brings cooler and wetter weather. Be prepared. Dress appropriately; bring extra layers, and dry clothes. Start early, end early, and pack a flashlight.
