Claws to recognize high school coaches

On Jan. 5, the Maine Red Claws organization is recognizing local high school coaches and athletes who are participating in the Coaching Boys Into Men (CBIM) program.

By doing so, they are sending the strong message that violence against women is never acceptable. Each year, over 50 percent of Maine’s homicides are the result of domestic violence, and 32 percent of Maine women experience rape or an attempted rape during their lifetime. Coaching Boys Into Men is a program designed to bring those statistics down by inspiring young athletes.

The Red Claws have provided over 200 discounted tickets for CBIM athletes, coaches, families, and friends. On game day, all participants are invited to join players courtside during the pre-game warmup and shoot-around. There will be a PSA broadcast, CBIM information, and a generous giveaway to the first 100 ticket-holders. Area schools that offer the program are South Portland High School, North Yarmouth Academy, and A.R. Gould High School.

Battle on Ice

The Annual International Fire, Police and Military Winter Games Hockey Tournament, Battle on Ice, is scheduled to run from Jan. 17 to the 19. It will be held at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée, on 190 Birch St., in Lewiston.

The three-day event will consist of two days of qualifying throughout the day and on Sunday two final qualifying games and the finals will be played. The tournament hours are as follows, Friday from 7 am to 5:20pm, Saturday from 7 a.m to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., followed by the awards.

Single day tickets will cost $10.00 and a three day ticket, good for all 23 games, will cost $15.00, and can bepurchased at the door.

Most of the Out-of-State teams will be staying at the host hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn in Auburn. Thursday evening they will be providing a welcome get together for the skaters, family and friends, kicking off the 2014 Maine Event, Battle on Ice, where First Responders, Public Safety Officers and the Military athletes will battle it out on the ice for bragging rights and the opportunity to win the 2014 championship title.

Throughout the tournament, parties are planned at Gritty’s in Lewiston, and Pedro O’Hara’s in Auburn. Spectators will be invited to the parties when they show their hockey day ticket or tournament pass. Proceeds of the tournament will go to the Shriners Children’s Hospital, in Boston.
