1925 – 2014

SCARBOROUGH — Irving N. “Rip” Leighton Jr., 88, of Gray, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough.

He was born in Auburn on Oct. 10, 1925, a son of Irving N. Leighton Sr. and Agnes Cox Leighton. Irving was a World War II veteran of the Army Corps of Engineers, serving honorably as demolitions expert in Europe and the Philippines. He also worked as a certified “Doctor of Motors” (Perfect Circle Corporation), serving most of his honored career at Portland Transmission Exchange.

Irving was a member of the American Legion, Lyons Club and B.P.O.E. He enjoyed helping his family, yard work and tinkering.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, M. Edith Leighton; daughter, Donna L. McLaughlin and son-in-law, Carl McLaughlin; son, Gary I. Leighton and daughter-in-law, Eleanor Leighton; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, three sisters and three brothers.
