LEWISTON — A snowier-than-average winter continues to pile up numbers with a weekend storm forecast to dump another 6 inches in the Lewiston area by Sunday morning.
It should be over by about 8 a.m. locally but will linger throughout the day in eastern Maine, said meteorologist Michael Cempa of the National Weather Service in Gray.
And after a short rest, more snow is likely for Tuesday, he said.
“We are above normal in terms of snowfall,” he said.
On an average winter, the Gray office would have seen 50.4 inches of snow by now, Cempa said. Instead, it measured 61.3 inches. In Portland, the difference was even greater. Its average by this date is 40.6 inches and it has recorded 67. 4 inches. The weather service does not have comparable data for Lewiston.
There is some relief coming.
“We do see a bit of a pattern change,” he said. By the end of the week, he expected to see temperatures throughout the area rise into the 40s.
And even warmer weather will eventually arrive, he said. “It’s just a matter of time, right?”
