AUBURN — St. Dom’s head coach Steve Ouellette was looking to get solid effort from his club in its final regular season game, but penalties haunted the Saints in a 6-1 loss to the Bangor Rams on Wednesday night at Norway Savings Bank Arena.

The penalty-kill allowed three goals on nine chances, while at the other end, the Saints went 0-for-5 with the man advantage.

“I thought we were going to get a solid effort coming in here tonight and really after the first (period), it was really a 2-1 game,” Ouellette said. “We didn’t play a great period, but we didn’t play a tremendous bad period.

“That second period we took too many penalties and guys not focusing on their assignments,” he said.

Bangor coach Quinn Paradis was satisfied with his team’s play, which included a hat trick from Trevor Delaite and a goal and three assists from Sam Kenney.

“We had a great performance from all of our players today,” Paradis said. “I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game, the boys played above expectations and I am proud of them.”

The Saints had trouble stopping the Rams’ power play in the first period. Just as Bangor’s first power play ended, Kyle Farley’s blast found the back of the net 7:10 into the period. Kenney picked up the lone assist.

“Our power play is on right now and we are really good,” Paradis said. “It will be great for the future. A solid power play is what we struggled with at the beginning of the year, and it’s really strong now.”

St. Dom’s answered at the 8:23 mark of the opening frame as Brad Berube and Austin Roy set up Avery Jones for the tying goal.

Bangor’s power play went back to work with less than three minutes remaining in the first, and the Rams notched their first official power play goal with 1:03 remaining when Sam Kenney earned his second point with the goal. Justin Courtney and Sam Huston set him up.

“(Sam Kenney) had a very outstanding game, he has been playing some solid hockey for us, he scored two goals Monday night (against Brewer),” Paradis added. “He’s tough to knock off the puck.”

“One when the clock expired, another one pretty close to that,” Ouellette said of the power play goals the Saints allowed. “It wasn’t (Caleb Dostie’s) fault either. One was a beautiful tip, the puck started low and went high real quick. Unfortunately, we didn’t respond well to those penalties. We started to get out of what would be assignments and we started thinking about making the big play.”

The Rams notched their second power-play goal 2:45 into the middle frame when Trevor Delaite knocked one by Dostie. Andrew Elston and Courtney set him up. Delaite notched his second of the period at 9:52, with Kenney getting his third point of the night on the helper.

Delaite completed the hat trick with 31 seconds remaining in the period after Cam Dickson threw the initial shot on net.

Courtney added Bangor’s third power play goal withKenney picking up another assist with 2:40 remaining in the game for Bangor’s sixth goal of the night.

Rye Powell made 12 saves for the Rams, while Dostie turned aside ten shots in the loss for St. Dom’s.
