LEWISTON — Bates junior Kelsey Freedman broke team records for strikeouts in a game, season and career all in the same game on Monday, as the Bobcats completed their sweep of Maine Maritime Academy in non-conference softball action.
Freedman piled up 17 strikeouts in Bates’ 5-0 win in Game 2 of the doubleheader, after the Bobcats defeated the visiting Mariners 7-2 in Game 1.
Bates rose to 7-15 overall this season, while MMA dropped to 4-16.
The highest known total strikeouts thrown by a Bobcat pitcher prior to the day was 10 — a number met once previously by Freedman, and on two other occasions by her former teammate Caroline Gattuso.
Freedman’s strikeout total for the season is now 84, surpassing the former team record of 77 set by Gattuso in 2011. Freedman’s career total ballooned to 192, two more than Gattuso’s former career record of 190.
Melissa Paione hit a home run and Abigail Abbott added a pinch single to score a run in game 1. Bates’ Karen Lockhart was 5-for-7 on the day.

BEVERLY, Mass. – Junior Rockwell Jackson went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, senior Griff Tewksbury notched three RBIs, and Bates baseball beat Endicott, 8-4, at North Field on Monday afternoon.
The Bobcats (14-11) took a 6-0 lead over the Gulls (21-10) after the top of the second inning and did not trail the rest of the way. The Gulls currently rank seventh in the latest New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Poll.
First-year right-hander Anthony Telesca went five innings in the start, striking out two while allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits in his first career win. Sophomore Connor Colombo and junior Aidan Sullivan held the Gulls to one hit and no runs over four innings of relief.
Endicott starter Tyler Hill (4-2) took the loss, giving up eight runs, all earned, on nine hits over 4.2 innings. Gulls relievers Luke Morse, Colby Morris, and Steve Morganelli did not allow a run.
After Jackson scored a run in the top of the first, the Bobcats struck five times in the top of the second to take a 6-0 lead. Senior Steve Burke, sophomore Samuel Warren, and senior Jeff Gunn each reached base safely to load the bases, Jackson singled into center field, putting Bates up 2-0.
Tewksbury then came to the plate two batters later and emptied the bases with a double to left center to give the Bobcats a 5-0 lead. Senior Kevin Davis followed with a single to right which plated Tewksbury for the inning’s final run.
Endicott plated a run in the bottom of the fourth off a single from E.J. Martinez, but the Bobcats responded for another two runs in the top of the fifth to take an 8-1 lead. Gunn doubled home the team’s first run in the inning before Jackson brought Gunn home with a single to center field.
The Gulls then cut their deficit to 8-4 with three runs — all with two outs — in the last half of the fifth. Tad Gold brought in a run with a single to center, and Brett Holmgren followed with a single up the middle which plated another two runners.
Colby 8, UMF 7
WATERVILLE — Dan Csaplar earned the pitching win and laced an RBI double to drive in pinch-runner Conor Bruen with the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead Colby to an 8-7 win over University of Maine at Farmington on Monday at Coombs Field.
