POLAND — The Planning Board on Tuesday approved plans for a McDonald’s Restaurant at C.N. Brown’s gas station at Five Corners on Route 26.

The plans, as approved, addressed the board’s earlier concerns with the design of the roof on the McDonald’s portion in the sketch plans presented by Tom Saucier, engineer with Site Design Associates of Topsham.

The plans were altered to more closely align with ordinance provisions that call for a “New England village look” for developments in the town’s downtown village area. The plans call for a shingled mansard style roof over the restaurant and adjoining Big Apple convenience store.

The canopy over the line of 10 fuel-pump bays will also sport a mansard style roof.

The landscaping plan was altered to include more shrubbery to address the board’s other concern, that of screening the development from a residential area on Route 11.

According to C.N. Brown representative Kevin Moore, work on the project should begin in June with completion expected in October.

In other business, the board also met with Conservation Commission members Don Stover and Fred Huntress to review plans for improvements at the town’s Waterhouse Park.

The park is between Poland Corner Road and the firehouse. It surrounds the dam that marks the farthest reach of Lower Range Pond and extends downstream more than a half-mile on both sides of Waterhouse Brook to the point where the brook crosses the old railroad bed.

The key feature of the plans is the installation of a prefabricated footbridge across the dam spillway as a final link in the park’s 1.6-mile hiking trail.

The Planning Board approved the concept plans but took no formal action, allowing that the Conservation Commission’s plans must pass muster with the Department of Environmental Protection.
