Ark classes: Money, minerals

LEWISTON — The Ark, 791 Lisbon St., has announced the following classes.

The Summer Herb Class Series “Mining for Minerals” will continue Monday, June 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with “A Salty Solution,” discussing seaweed and iodine.

Participants will learn some of the incredible benefits of eating seaweed regularly. Iodine deficiency is thought to be one of the reasons for so much breast cancer in this country. Seaweed is rich in iodine, but also in protein, calcium, magnesium and a host of other minerals. Learn how to make Sea Zest Seasoning and take home the third herb plant.

The cost is $10. Registration is required.

A Money Management Seminar on the topic of credit will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 17.

Topics will include: What is a credit score? How can I find out mine? How can I establish or improve on my credit habits to make life easier? Answers will be given to other credit-related concerns.

There is no fee and registration is not required.

Babysitting class offered at the Y

AUBURN — The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA is offering a babysitting class which will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 19, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the Y.

The class is an important step toward becoming a safe, responsible and successful babysitter. A good babysitter successfully uses leadership, basic care, safety and safe play, and first aid. This course has been designed around these four major themes. Upon completion, participants will receive an American Heart Association certificate in CPR.

The class fees are $65 for Y members, or $75 for nonmembers. Participants must be 11 to 15 years of age. Participants should also bring any snacks, lunch, drink etc. as they will be at the Y for the entire training.

Breakfast honors Korean War vets

AUBURN — The officers and members of the William J. Rogers post 153 will host a “Welcome Home Breakfast for Korean War Veterans” from 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday, June 22.

The menu will consist of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, baked beans, white or wheat toast and the military’s infamous S.O.S., Army coffee and juice, plus an old Beaulieu family recipe for crepes.

The cost is $6 for adults, $4 children under 12. All money raised supports the American Legion.

Lewiston Bridge Club winners

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Bridge Club winners at the Lewiston Armory on June 9th were as follows: first, Jeannine Kivus and David Lock; second, Nancy Lindgren and Rosemarie Goodwin; third, Jan and Vern Arey; fourth, Mary Trafton and Luke Merry; fifth, Patricia and Mike Quinn; first in B, Marta Clements and Nancy Farmer; second in B, first in C, Cynthia and Bill Clifford; third in B, second in C, Cindy Kirchherr and Jim Krainin.

Winners on June 10 were: first, Luke Merry and Mike Quinn; second, Kay Bagwell and Rosemarie Goodwin; third, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe; fourth, Richard Balian and Fred Letourneau; first in B and C, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe; second in B and C, Donna Bartlett and Sue Kaluzynski.

Nature program on Maine gems

TOPSHAM — A CREA Community Nature Program will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Topsham Public Library, 25 Foreside Road.

Gary Howard will present a free program, “On a Quest For Maine Gems,” stories of gem mining adventures in Western and Midcoast Maine.
