SHAPLEIGH — Route 11 in Shapleigh has reopened after a hazardous materials team determined that a suspicious white powder found on a rented DVD was harmless.

Fire and rescue personnel from several communities responded to the scene late Saturday afternoon.

Officials from various agencies would only confirm that crews were investigating an “incident.”

But just before 7:30 p.m., Rescue Chief Dick McGlincey of the Newfield Fire Department said tests on the powder were negative and the area roads had reopened.

“Somebody rented a DVD and brought it home and opened it up and there was a bunch of white powder,” he said. “Hazmat tested it and it was negative.”

Additional information was not immediately available Saturday.
