100 years ago, 1914
Spooks were much in evidence at the party given at the home of Miss Berdina Catland, Montello street, Friday evening, by the Epworth League of Park street Methodist Episcopal church, Lewiston. Four white-clad figures met the guests at the front of the house, from where they were conducted to the back door and from there wended their way thru the cellar and upstairs. The only light was from a glaring Jack-o’-lantern, and silent ghosts were ever peeping from the corners to direct with a ghastly finger. The only light, thruout the house, was from Jack-‘o-lanterns or shaded candles. The large reception room was decorated to represent a barn. In the dining-room was a tripod of saplings, and there a witch stirred her concoctions and served lemonade.

50 years ago, 1964
The Lewiston Fire Department received a fire report Friday night from the Air Force. A tanker plane flying over the city shortly after 7 p.m. spotted a blaze in South Lewiston, and reported this by radio to the FAA unit at the Portland airport. The agency telephoned the report to the dispatcher at the Lewiston station Engine 3 was sent out to check the area of the city and, it was determined that the aircraft crew had spotted the city dump burning. The department often receives calls about the dump fire, which sends up towering columns of smoke when the wind is right.

25 years ago, 1989
It’s trick or treat for Lewiston city politicians and appointees tonight when members of the City Council decide whether to give themselves a 50-percent pay hike and smaller pay increases for the mayor and other appointed officials. Councilors stand the most to gain if they pass a pay increase. Monthly salaries for the elected board would rise $75 to $150.
