Circle K has decided to close its store on Main Street in Old Town.
Rumors of the pending closure were first heard last week, and while officials for Circle K did not return calls to confirm the closure, signs appeared this week at the store announcing it would be closing this Friday, Dec. 5. And again, while Circle K officials have remained mum, there were reports that the closure came about because Circle K did not want to invest in replacement of gas tanks at.
The closure comes even as Circle K is doing extensive renovations to its store on Stillwater Avenue in Orono, one of several stores in the region the Canadian-based company has revamped in the past couple years. And apparently, the Old Town Circle K is not the only one closing, as there have been reports that other stores face the same fate.
Circle K is the fourth largest convenience store chain in the US, with more than 3,400 stores. At one time the company had more than 4,600 stores, but stiff competition over the years has led to fewer stores. The company came to Maine in 2008, when it began leasing Irving stores.
