LISBON — The Lisbon Community School Parent-Teacher Organization and the Philip W. Sugg Middle School Parent Action Group have partnered with the Office of Special Services at the Lisbon School Department, as well as the Maine Parent Federation, to present a series of free workshops for parents and caregivers of children who may be involved in receiving special education services.
These workshops are geared specifically for parents of different age groups, and will be facilitated by Ann Long of the Maine Parent Federation.
On Jan. 22, a workshop titled “Making Friends with the IEP” will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lisbon Community School discovery room. Snow date is Jan. 29. Child care will be provided by LHS and young adult volunteers in the cafeteria during the program
During the workshop, participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and will receive a copy of the Maine Unified Special Education regulations and will talk about the IEP process and review common terms and definitions.
The workshop is designed for parents, foster parents, or anyone who has, or works with, a child between the ages of 2 and 20 years who has an IEP or 504 plan.
Other workshops include:
“Transition Planning: The Middle School Years,” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Philip W. Sugg Middle School library. Snow date is March 5. This workshop will help parents understand the transition process, learn who to contact and when for various services, and understand more about options and choices that are key to a successful transition process.
“Kindergarten Transition for Children Working with CDS,” from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, Lisbon Community School discovery room. This workshop will help parents prepare for a child’s transition from child development services to public school.
“Transition Planning: The High School Years,” from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, Lisbon High School library. During this workshop participants will explore ways to prepare for their child’s future and learn how to involve their child in transition planning. They will also learn about the IEP requirements for transitions plans and begin the process of developing a transition plan for children.
Advance registration is not required. Child care will not be provided at the programs held at the middle and high schools.
