GREENE — Police arrested a Jay man in the Circle K robbery last month, and investigators didn’t have to go very far.
Police said Thomas John Mulkern, 29, of 6 Jewell St., was already in the Androscoggin County Jail on charges involving a scuffle with Auburn police on the day of the heist. In that incident on Feb. 15, Mulkern was arrested on charges of assaulting an officer, violating conditions of release, unlawful possession of drugs and refusing to submit to arrest.
Earlier this week, Androscoggin County Sheriff’s investigators went to the jail to charge Mulkern with robbery, theft and violating conditions of release stemming from the heist at the Circle K.
Police said that at about 3 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, Mulkern walked into the Circle K, wearing a hood over his head and a shirt over his face, and demanded money from the 61-year-old woman working behind the counter.
The clerk complied, police said, and Mulkern made off with an undisclosed amount of cash from the register.
Police on Friday said they recovered clothes and other items used in the robbery, but the money has not been found.
Mulkern has remained jailed on $10,000 bail since he was charged with fighting with Auburn police. After he was arrested on the robbery charge, bail was set at $25,000.
