TOPSHAM — The American Legion Post #202 in Topsham was renamed Saturday afternoon in honor of Sergeant Corey Garver.

Sergeant Garver was skilled in Afghanistan in 2013 when his unit was ambushed. After leading his men to safety, he died from injuries sustained when he stepped on an improvised explosive device.

According to WMTW, the rededication ceremony marked the 50th anniversary of Post #202.  The post said it is Maine’s first American Legion to be named for a fallen hero from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Proceeds from the ceremony will benefit veterans’ programs.
