LEWISTON — Police said a Lewiston man was arrested Wednesday on charges of robbing a Portland taxi driver of $100 at knifepoint on Walnut Street.

Portland taxi driver Rashid Olhaye told police he picked up a man early Wednesday afternoon at the Portland bus station. The passenger asked to be driven to 93 Walnut St. in Lewiston, Olhaye said.

When the taxicab arrived at the Walnut Street address at about 1 p.m., Olhaye said, the passenger reached over the seat, grabbed money out of Olhaye’s front shirt pocket and showed him a knife.

Olhaye followed the suspect into the building and saw the man leaving through a rear exit, he said. Olhaye ran around the back and confronted the passenger, who showed him the knife again.

About $100 in small bills were taken, Olhaye told police.

The suspect ran toward the downtown and took a left on Pierce Street, Olhaye told police. The suspect was last seen going into the woods in that area.

Police fanned out across the area and at about 3 p.m., information led them to Kamari Solomon, 18, of 308 Bates St. Solomon was taken in for questioning and ultimately charged with robbery and theft of services.

He remained at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on Wednesday night.
