1922 – 2016
PORTLAND — Grace G. Smith, 93, of Portland died on Monday, April 18, at the Barron Center in Portland following a short illness.
She was born in Auburn on Aug. 6, 1922, the daughter of the late Perley and Ethel (Stanmore) Gilbert and had been a resident of this community for most of her life.
She attended Auburn schools and was a graduate of Edward Little High School, Class of 1940. She then attended and graduated school of Missionary Training at Nyack Institute in New York.
She was involved with women and children’s ministries.
She had married Joseph Smith on May 18, 1952; he died on Aug. 16, 1985.
Grace enjoyed arts and crafts, music, playing the piano and the dulcimer at various nursing homes in Portland and singing with the church choir at the Court Street Baptist Church in Auburn.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends whom she considered as family.
